BS EN 1090 and CE Marking of Structural Steel and Aluminium Products

What are CE Marking and BS EN 1090-1?

In 2011 the European Construction Products Directive (ECPD) came into force placing requirements on all designers, manufacturers and distributors of construction products that are sold in the EU to ensure they meet minimum performance standards and confirm this by affixing a CE Mark to them. BS EN 1090-1 is the standard that specifies these requirements for structural steel and aluminium components used in construction products and how they should be CE Marked.

What are the benefits of BS EN 1090-1 and CE Marking?

From July 1st 2014, all companies supplying structural steel and aluminium components in the EU must be certified to BS EN 1090-1 and implement CE Marking for their products in order to comply with the ECPD. It is an offence to supply a product unless it conforms to this standard and carries a legitimate CE Mark.  Trading Standards are empowered to force companies to withdraw and recall products that do not comply.
